More Education,
More Knowledge, and
More Competitive. That's APICS!
January held some changes for our chapter. Ellen asked to be relieved of the duties of the office of President. The board of directors voted me, as new president, for the remainder of this term. Ellen has devoted many hours to the chapter, and her service is greatly appreciated. She will continue to support the chapter, in the position of past president.
We had a very good PDM in January. Inventory, Gone Wild, was well received. I especially enjoyed the many questions asked from the participants of this event. Our speaker was Anne Haberkorn, who will also be running our February seminar. The Economy and the Operation Management Professional /World Café is scheduled for February 26, at Giovanni’s Restaurant. Early bird registration, with a $50 discount will expire on February 10, so be sure to sign up now! More details are on the local chapter website – www.apics-rockvalley.org, under the seminar tab.
As companies cut back on their budgets, hard decisions have to be made. These decisions affect all of us. Sometimes professional memberships and classes are no longer supported. It is important for each of you to understand the value of being an APICS member.
PDM, short for Personal Development Meeting, is a place for you to network. Not just for personal reasons, but for professional ones. Can you imagine a better place to discuss a work related problem that seems to have no good solution coming from the people within your company? PDM’s are full of people who may have encountered similar events. They are always willing to share the good and bad of past events. You can possibly come away from one of these events with new ideas to share.
Classes are offered to help you obtain certification. We offer CPIM classes through Rock Valley College. Our next ones start in February. Other classes are offered on-line, and through other chapters in the region. Employers often notice what certifications and organizations you belong to, when multiple qualified candidates, have applied for a position.
Webcasts, webinars, and newsletters offer further opportunities to expand your knowledge base. Membership gives you access to current and archived articles that can be perused at your leisure. The national website offers a place, where members can participate in Learning Communities. Current learning communities contain such topics as Lean, Theory of Constraints, and Project Oriented Operations. Members can start new ones at any time.
Please consider the benefits of APICS participation. Do not become complacent about your membership. Use it to get all the advantages you can. It is an investment in your future. Your local chapter is always looking for feedback on topics that you would like to see presented. If you want to contact me, I am available at nancyreaf@gmail.com.
